5 Makeup Habits That Are Aging Your Look (And How to Fix Them)

Hey, girlfriends! Lets have a little honest chat. Sometimes it’s not the chronological aging that’s adding years to our look…it’s our makeup habits. The way you apply your makeup can either soften your features and keep you looking fresh or it can unintentionally add heaviness, texture, and years.
The truth is, though, a lot of us are still applying makeup the same way we did years ago when we first started our makeup journeys- even though our skin, lifestyle, and needs have evolved. So, let’s clean that up.
Here are five common makeup habits that may be aging your look- and what to do instead:

Here's the Glambition Tip Tuesday radio segment where I break this down live:

Over Powdering the Face
Powder is meant to set and finish the makeup, not mask the skin. I'm going to hold your hand when I say this, that baking trend? It's not for everyone or every makeup look. So many women are over-powdering or baking areas that don’t need it.
Baking can settle into fine lines and leave the skin looking dry and overly textured.
The Fix:
Lightly dust powder where needed
Press powder into oil-prone areas (like the T-zone) for control
Leave the rest of the skin with a natural finish
Key shift: Matte everything ≠ better. Strategic placement = smoother skin.
Applying Foundation Too Heavily
The intention for foundation is to simply cover the skin and even skin tone. It was never intended to mask texture. Texture is normal. However, heavy applications of foundation don’t hide texture, instead it highlights it.
When foundation sits on top of the skin instead of blending into it, it can make the skin look heavier and less natural. If more coverage is desired to fully cover, choose a more full coverage foundation instead of layering it on too heavy.
The Fix:
Choose your desired coverage and formula
Apply thin, buildable layers
Focus on spot concealing only where needed
Let your natural skin show through
Key shift: Skin should look like skin, but just more even and refined.
Skipping Cream Products
I know... I know, cream products can be so intimidating since most on the market come heavily pigmented, can be a bitdifferent to work with, but if your routine is all powder, your makeup can start to look flat and dry.
Cream products bring movement, dimension, and a natural glow back into the skin.
The Fix:
Incorporate cream blush or bronzer
Layer creams under powders for longevity
Focus on adding life back into the face
Key shift: Cream products mimic real skin and real skin isn’t flat.
Over-Defining the Brows
Harsh, dark, or overly structured brows can harden your features and make your face look more severe. Brows should enhance- not overpower.
The Fix:
Use light, hair-like strokes
Blend with a spoolie for softness
Focus on shape and balance over heaviness
This is why using a well-designed brow pencil matters — one that allows you to create detail and definition without overloading the brow. The Signature by Mikaya Dionne Brow Pencil gets the job done with ease and leaves you with a beautifully defined brow.
Key shift: Your brows should frame your face, not compete with it.
5. Ignoring Skin Prep
If your skin isn’t properly prepped, your makeup will show it.
Dryness, separation, patchiness- these are all signs of poor prep, not bad makeup.
The Fix:
Start with hydration (yes, even oily skin)
Allow skincare to absorb before applying makeup
Use primer according to your needs (oil control, longevity, blurring, etc)
No foundation, no matter how expensive, will perform well on unprepared skin.
Key shift: Prep determines performance.
Finally, please understand that makeup should evolve with you. What worked a few years ago may not work the same today and that’s okay. A few intentional adjustments can make your entire look feel softer, fresher, and more refined.
The goal isn’t necessarily to look younger, but to look like the most confident, polished version of you. If looking younger IS your desire, these tips will help you achieve that, too!
And if you’re not sure which of these habits you might be doing, this is exactly what I teach inside my group classes and 1:1 learning sessions.
