Last week I shared makeup trends for the new year and at the top of the list was the “No Makeup” makeup look where it looks like you just woke up beautiful. It's an effortless look, natural, glowing skin. It sounds easy, but mastering a "barely there " makeup look can be challenging, so I'm giving you the play-by-play, step by step instructions AND product recommendations to pull off this trending look! Let’s get into it!
SKIN PREP
First thing’s first… if you want this look to be executed in the best way possible it’s gotta start with SKIN. This look is all about glowing, natural skin so there’s no better way to achieve that than to ACTUALLY have glowing, natural skin. Now, I understand everybody wasn’t born with flawless skin and this step takes a little effort, but I promise you… taking care of your skin will never go out of style and
you’ll be so grateful you did. So, the no makeup look heavily depends on your skin prep. Using moisturizing gel masks, sheet masks, hydrating serums and moisturizer before you apply makeup ensures you’ll achieve that natural glow you’re looking for. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
PRIME
When you’re wanting to achieve a minimal look, it’s important that you focus on smoothing out the base. Using a primer helps to make sure all the nooks and crannies are filled in giving you a smooth canvas to prevent your foundation from having holes in it. It also helps to give your makeup longevity. You can cater your product choices to what kind of look you’re going for or your skin type. A pore-filling primer will smooth and fill any pores without clogging them the way a thick foundation might. An illuminating primer will add that “lit from within” glow and make you look extra hydrated.
LIGHTWEIGHT COVERAGE
For this look you’ll want to steer clear of the heavy, full coverage foundations and opt for a more lightweight option. Liquid foundation, tinted moisturizer, CC Cream or a skin tint adds moisture to your skin, a very lightweight coverage, but still allows some of your natural skin to shine through. Using liquid foundation blends easily and allows you to build your coverage using a brush. While CC Creams, tinted moisturizers and skin tints should be bounced onto the skin using a damp blending sponge.
LIGHTLY CONCEAL
I get it… achieving this trendy look sounds kinda scary since everything is so lightweight and the coverage is barely there. So, if you’re still not ok with blemishes and dark circles being seen you can definitely use concealer, but make sure it’s not a matte finish and blend it with your fingers instead of any other tool. The warmth from your fingers will help to melt the concealer into your skin giving you natural coverage.
WARM IT UP WITH CREAM BRONZER/BLUSH
Cream products are my absolute favorite to work with because they’re easy to blend into the skin and give a very natural blend. For this look, instead of contouring with a powder, concealer or cream foundation, opt for a cream bronzer at the top of your cheekbones and the temples and blend into the hollows of your cheeks to create dimension and intensify the look a little bit but still keeping it light and airy. These NEW Cream Bronzer Duo Sticks from Mary Kay are amazing! They blend so flawlessly and give just the right amount of glow and dimension. They make for very easy application aand storage since it's in stock form!
I mentioned in last week's blog that blush was one of my favorite trends that are making a comeback this year. Blush always enhances a look when it’s applied correctly. Using a cream blush however is genius!!! It just blends and sinks right in and gives the appearances of a slight hint of flush color. After applying your foundation, concealer and bronzer, blend a cream blush with a damp sponge to the apples of the cheeks, up onto the temples, and right on the bridge of the nose.
ADD SOME GLOW
Adding a nice glow to the tops of the cheekbones can go a long way in making your face look natural but still glowy. Rather than going for a traditional shimmery highlighter, opt for a cream with a clear base. This adds the perfect, natural dew to the skin. The texture of the product will also blend right in with all the other cream products on the face.
NATURAL BROWS
Enhance the beauty of your natural brows by simply using a brow gel with fibers and brushing them up and into place. OR... if your'e a brow pencil and brush kinda girl and still prefer a more structured brow, checkout my Glambition Brow Tutorial here to get the perfect brow EVERY time!
LIGHT MASCARA
Since this is a “no makeup” look, and the skin is the star of the show you don’t want to kill this look by doing too much on the eyes. Simply curling the lashes and applying a light coat of mascara to the lashes to separate and enhance them is enough. If you’re heavy handed, opt for a black/brown mascara.
TINTED/LIGHTLY GLOSSED LIPS
The goal here is to tint your lips, not paint or overly gloss them. The hack to tinted lips is to apply your most natural lip color lipstick to the lips and blot with a tissue. This gives you an effortless, barely there but still gorgeous lip! Almost like if you ate a popsicle and it stained your lips.
You can also choose a clear or slightly pink gloss if you prefer a more glossy look.
You've been warned! This is one of the MOST trending makeup looks in the beauty game right now. Once you master it, it'll probably be your go-to look! Will you be giving it a try? Let me know in the comments and tag me in your photos when you follow these steps! It's a "NO MAKEUP" makeup year!
