5 Ways to Spring Clean Your Skin

We celebrated the 1st day of spring yesterday and usually we can tell it’s spring by the drastic change in warmer temperatures… idk what’s going on this year, but it is officially SPRING. The season that’s associated with all things NEW- new blooms, new beginnings, new clarity is more than welcomed this year. Out with the old.. in with the NEW! And that goes for EVERYTHING including your skin care! I’m sure you probably think I’m going to tell you to “spring clean” and throw all your stuff away, but not quite! 😆

It’s not necessarily about swapping old formulas or products for new ones, but rather changing the focus from nourishing and soothing from the harsh winter to brightening and smoothing for spring and summer. Let's get into it:

Deep Clean

Hopefully by now you know the importance of cleansing your skin, but it’s just as important (if not more) in the spring as it is in any season. You’re combatting polllen in the air, warmer temperatures, more sweat and pore clogging potential than you were in the winter. The KEY is thought to make sure you’re cleansing for 60 seconds twice a day and you’re using the right cleansing formula for your skin type. In a cleanser you want to make sure it not only

supports your skin type but also supports the barrier function of the skin with ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

Decongest

If you’re dealing with clogged pores, or spots from those clogged pores it may be time to reconsider your formulas. This can be typical during season changes… especially from winter to spring because we were doing heavy moisturizers and oils to combat dry skin and the dry cold air, but if you find you’re having more breakouts now that the season is changing this may be your clue to switch things up a bit. I highly recommend scheduling a spring facial with your esthetician to decongest your skin and get it prepped for the new season. That will include a deep clean, extractions if you need them and recommendations for at home care for the new season. If you’re going to take your shot at unclogging your own pores at home, the best way to do that is to take a gentle approach with an exfoliant and mask, once a week. Clay or charcoal based masks help draw out impurities and calm angry spots, too, and salicylic acid is also your friend. It’s a BHA that penetrates and breaks down clogged oil, and it has a great anti-inflammatory effect too.

If you are suffering from more persistent blemishes, seek help from a professional – whether dermatologist or esthetician.

Smooth

We’ve discussed that the new trend in spring skincare and makeup is naturally smooth, glowing skin and barely their makeup, but it starts at the skin level! Skin texture is the key to youthful looking skin and since the sun will be shining a lot more (hopefully) in the spring, that smoothie surface will have that light bouncing off that skin and glowing!! The best way to achieve smooth skin is exfoliation. You can exfoliate physically with a scrub or chemically with a tonic or booster serum. Exfoliating helps clear out any blockages and dissolves the skin’s surface layers to brighten, smooth and clear. Be sure not to overdo it, though. If your skin is already damaged and dry this will only cause even more dryness, irritation and redness – it depends on your skin type, but apply once every few days as a general rule.

Brighten

Now this step isn’t exactly about brightening your skin color, but more about adding radiance to your skin. Glowy skin can be tricky to achieve in winter, when central heating, cold temperatures and a general lack of sunlight make their mark upon us. In spring, it’s all about boosting radiance. Healthy skin starts with decent sleep, hydration and formulas that boost luminosity and even skin tone. Those formulas are those including

  • niacinimides which supports the skin barrier, smooths and reduces the appearance of pores

  • Vitamin C which is brilliant for boosting brightness as well as collagen production

  • Hyalauronic Acid which supports the skin barrier and improves moisture retention

  • Glycerin a humectant and type of moisturizing agent that pulls water into the outer layer of skin from deeper levels and from the air.

Protect

While you’re spring cleaning, protect your skin from damage by chucking out any expired products you may have.. ESPECIALLY products with SPF. It’s a completely bad idea to use expired Spf… you’ll have a whole other problem on your hands if you do, but be sure to keep spf in your regimen because that is key to protecting your skin from the harsh rays of the sun.
